What a fantastic old kanga! Given to me by a friend, it depicts the previous four presidents of Tanzania among a theme of footprints. It is a bit worn and faded but is still a standout in my collection because of its commemorative significance. It was made by African Pride Textile Mills in Dar es Salaam, which has long been long closed. The kanga must have been made during the Kikwete presidency which was from 2005 – 2015. Black is one of the official colors of Tanzania and the others (blue, green and yellow) can also be seen here in the footprints, border and some accents in the center.
The four presidents on the is kanga are: Julius Nyerere (served from 1964 -1985), Ali Hassan Mwinyi (served from 1985-1995), Benjamin Mkapa (served from 1995 – 2005) and Jakaya Kikwete (served from 2005 – 2015). The current president of Tanzania is John Magufuli and he can be seen on kangas posted here and here.
