NIDA TEXTILES

My family and I were lucky enough to be invited to visit NIDA Textiles in Dar es Salaam. Nida is one of the biggest producers of kangas in Tanzania and we were able to see the whole process in their factories, from cotton to kanga. Amin Godil, their Director of Business Development has been teaching me a lot about kangas and on our recent trip to Dar, he gave my family and me a tour of their facilities!

Here we are looking at an early step in the whole process – the cotton before it is cleaned. All of the cotton is grown in Tanzania

There are two Nida factories in Dar. The first one creates plain cloth from cotton. At the second, the designs are printed onto the cloth and then cut into pieces. At Nida, they make kangas and also vitenge and bedsheets. Unfortunately, no photography is allowed in the second factory, but we took lots of pictures in the first, where the cloth is made.

We also visited the Nida shops in Dar where they sell all of the beautiful kangas that are made by Nida.
